Barone, Drexel and Harris
by: Aron Wallad
My life was always about playing ball, mostly baseball as I grew up. Therefore, I was always at the playground on Chancellor Avenue. This was a hotbed for sports activity in the Weequahic section of Newark, New Jersey in the 1960's. From Monday through Saturday there were countless games taking place. Baseball at Untermann Field and softball on the blacktop. Basketball games, and volley ball games were always being played.
Mr Barone, Mr Drexel and Mr Harris oversaw the games that were played. Sometimes they even played in those games. They ran the show. Organizing teams for a given game or creating teams for a new league they took charge and got things done. I did not realize some of the things they did that impacted my life until I left the playground scene many years later.
I looked up to all three of them, for being fair, for listening when I had a problem and for being funny. Each one of them was unique. Each one of them has taught me in their own style.
Mr Barone or Mr B as most of us called him was about three feet tall ( really about five foot two ). The only thing that was small about him was his height. Playing ball with the teenagers was one of his favorite activities. He often was the director that played in the games when we needed another guy. I would also see Mr B talking to some kids in the batting cage teaching them some fundamentals about hitting. He always made himself available either on the playing field or by helping some kids with their homework. I appreciated that he gave of himself. So did many of the other kids. A great guy.
Mr Drexel or Billy Boy as we sometimes affectionately called him was the jokester. No matter how serious I thought the situation was Mr Drexel had his way of making the incident a little less severe. His lightening up of the moment always made us laugh. I loved that about him. He was noted for his chicanery on the field or basketball court. He would find an edge and use it. All within the rules. A Drexel play was referred to bending the rule as far as you could. Hidden ball tricks in baseball and sneaky out of bounds plays in basketball were two of his specialties. What was great was how often they worked. He knew just when to use them. A great guy.
Mr Harris seemed like the leader of the group. The other directors called him Bucky. I always called him Mr Harris. He spoke sternly and was always fair. He was the law. I had the utmost respect for him. I thought it was an honor to go to the store and buy him his Garcia Vega cigars. When he asked me to go I felt like I won something. A great guy.
For me these three guys were my mentors as I was growing up. Providing me with guidance on and off the field. There was always one of them at the playground to talk to or get things going so we could play an organized game. I learned about fairness, being stern and about taking the edge off in a seriousness situation from them.
And while I have not spoken to any of them in quite some time, Felice Barone, William Drexel and Bucky Harris will always be in my hall of fame. They meant a lot to me.

15 Simple Metabolism Boosting Secrets
by: Janice Elizabeth Small
Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. The faster you burn calories the more weight you can lose even if you eat the same amount, so it makes sense to do everything you can to boost your metabolic rate if you're trying to lose a few pounds.
You use about 60% of the calories you need each day just by being alive. That's your basal (or resting) metabolism. About 30% of the calories are accounted for by how much you move (your activity metabolism). The remaining 10% are used up by the process of digesting food (your thermic metabolism).
By making some simple changes you can fire up all three types of metabolism and become leaner faster.
1. Eat little and often
Small and regular meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism high. If you eat the same amount of food in just one or two large meals as you do in five or six mini-meals and snacks you will burn fewer calories. This is because your metabolism slows down between meals. Never skip meals to save calories. Having a low-calorie snack will work much better and will also stop you falling ravenously on the nearest chocolate bar later in the day.
2. Eat breakfast
Your metabolism slows down overnight. When you have been through a period of more than eight hours without eating you need food to get your metabolism going again. So have breakfast as soon as you can after you wake up. If you're not a breakfast person take something healthy with you when you leave the house and have it is soon as you can face it. It's not great for your weight loss plans to have to boost your metabolism with a mid morning cookie or cake.
3. Eat enough
If you eat too few calories, your metabolic rate will automatically drop. This is a self preservation mechanism, which kicks in when your body thinks you are starving. The safest bet is to eat about 250 calories less than you need at the sedentary level and to take 250 - 500 calories of exercise each day to give a steady weight loss of between one and two pounds a week.
4. Eat Lean Protein
It takes more energy for the body to digest protein than carbohydrate or fat. Studies have shown that people who eat a high-protein diet burn more than twice as many calories in the hours following their meal as those eating a high carbohydrate diet. While the safety of high-protein diets can be disputed, it does make sense to include some lean protein as part of each meal.
5. Eat Fibre
Food with lots of fibre also gives your thermic metabolism a boost. High-fibre foods like beans, fruit, vegetables and whole grains simply take longer to digest and therefore help burn more calories.
6. Spice up your food
Spicy foods (especially chilli) raise the metabolism by as much as twenty-five per cent for a few hours after eating. So eat hot and spicy food a bit more regularly and see if this helps you. Just go easy on the refried beans and guacamole if you decide to go Mexican!
7. Drink Coffee
Caffeine speeds up your heart rate and the faster your heart rate the more calories you burn. Not great if you have heart problems or difficulty getting to sleep however!
8. Drink Green Tea
The phytochemicals in green tea are supposed to raise metabolism slightly by causing your brain and nervous system to run more quickly. Although not many sizable and conclusive studies have been done on this to date, drinking green tea rather than milky coffee or other calorie-laden beverages will definitely help you lose weight!
9. Get active
Aerobic exercise for more than thirty minutes not only burns calories but also keeps your metabolism high for several hours afterwards. The best time for exercise is in the morning as it will help kick start your metabolism for the day. If you can do 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise almost every day your metabolism will soar. Interval training would help even more.
10. Walk it off
If you prefer to take light exercise, try going for a walk after lunch or dinner. This boosts the rise in metabolism you get after eating. No strenuous exercising on a full stomach though.
11. Build those muscles
Muscles burn calories even when you're resting. For every pound of muscle you add, you burn about 50 extra calories a day without taking any more exercise. So it's a great idea to include some resistance or weight training in your exercise regime. Twenty minutes three times a week is enough to make a big difference in your metabolic rate as well as the shape of your body.
12. Go hot or cold
Any extremes of temperature you experience will help raise your metabolism by up to 20 percent as the body attempts to cool you down or raise your temperature. Make sure it's safe for you to go in the sauna or on the arctic expedition though before you try this one. You could have a go at keeping your home a few degrees cooler than is comfortable for sitting around in winter and restrict the air conditioning to the very hottest days in summer. In the winter it will help you get up and get moving and in summer encourage you to go to the pool to cool off!
13. Drink Iced Water
Another trick is to drink a glass of iced water a few times a day. You'll raise your metabolism just by having to bring the water up to body temperature. Drinking water is required anyway, of course, to keep your bodily functions working smoothly (including your metabolism).
14. Watch the alcohol
On top of the empty calories that alcohol contains, it also has a dehydrating effect, which slows down your thermic metabolism. Alcohol tends to inhibit the process of metabolizing fat too, which can lower your basal metabolism. And there's not much chance of you wanting to exercise after all that booze so it'll have an effect on your activity metabolism too. Bad news all round!
15. Take up yoga
The chemical processes which comprise your metabolism are regulated by the endocrine system, especially the thyroid. Yoga has many postures which have a powerful twisting and compressing effect on the endocrine organs, strengthening and stimulating them and this can help to regulate and boost your metabolism.
If you boost your metabolism with these tips, you'll be improving your general health as well as your capacity to burn calories. You'll not only find that you lose weight more quickly but also that you will have more energy, greater strength and you'll be able to get through everything you have to do in a day more easily.

A "Reality" Practice
by: Clive Taylor
Suggested practice to gain freedom from self-limitation.
It is suggested that what is actual and real in the world can only be experienced in the ongoing moment (by moment) and that to be fully in the moment can only happen if all ideas and beliefs about it are gone from the psyche – including the sense of "I", of self identity.
Look at every idea, belief, or truth about life, no matter how unquestionable it may be, and ask: "Is this thing I believe, or someone else wants me to believe, actual and demonstrable to me or others? (For example, "We all have souls": Ask, "Show me.")
If it can't be shown or isn't demonstrable in any way that someone who doesn't already believe it can experience, then just put it aside.
Not believing it or disbelieving it. (The idea being believed may actually be a reflection of what is real. Blind disbelieving can also be a manifestation of some other belief.)
(A suggested definition of Belief: "An idea of how things are that is only demonstrably real to those who hold the same idea as real.")
The more we put aside all ideas about what is real, the more we will begin to experience and live what is real, with an increasing clarity and freedom.
It is not as easy as it may sound, because most of our ideas and beliefs are so built-in to our natures that it is almost impossible to see them.
Also, the mind can take on new ideas such as "I'm now free of all beliefs" as another belief. Our psyches are very clever at this, so great diligence and attention is needed to not be taken in by more and more subtle beliefs.
As a "spiritual" practice, this has directness, simplicity and tangible results.
It needs no acceptance of complex idea structures that we need to believe in or practice, to become "enlightened", whatever that idea means.
It only needs our real intention for complete self honesty and the paying of full objective attention to what is in front of us.
Of course, this article also needs to be put aside and not believed or disbelieved – just pay attention to what is in front of you at any moment and discover for yourself what is actual and real.

Ottawa path attack leaves man critically hurt
A man was in critical condition Monday after being attacked on a wooded path in Ottawa's east end early Sunday morning.
Police were investigating Monday morning at the scene of the assault, a path in a forested area near the end of Lafayette Private, off Bathgate Drive near la CitГ© CollГ©giale.
The man had been walking on the path behind a row of townhomes in the Ottawa Community Housing Bathgate Court complex between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. ET Sunday when he was attacked by a another man.
He received serious to life-threatening injuries, and was recovering in hospital Monday after surgery.
Police said they only found out about the assault Sunday evening, and that was when they started investigating.
N.L. internet scammers sent to jail
A man and a woman who scammed people in Newfoundland and Quebec out of hundreds of thousands of dollars have each been sentenced to three years in jail.
Reyanne Briand, a Canadian, and Earl Matthews, a U.S. citizen, began their scam in Quebec before moving the operation to Grand Bank, N.L., a couple of years ago.
They lured victims with an internet scheme called “aid for families” before the RCMP finally caught up with them.
In June, a judge in southern Newfoundland found both Briand and Matthews guilty of fraud and possession of criminally obtained property.
At a sentence hearing Friday, Judge Harold Porter came down hard on the couple.
Briand and Matthews always maintained they did nothing wrong and claimed the police were making it all up.
On Friday, they asked the court to postpone their sentencing hearing until their lawyer's vacation ended.
Porter rejected their request. He said Matthews and Briand had repeatedly complained about delays in the justice system.
Porter said their lies brought victims to the brink of financial ruin. He pointed out that one of the people they defrauded contemplated suicide.
Porter said the pair chose to operate their scam in Canada to take advantage of the lower fraud sentences handed down by courts. So, he said, he wanted to make an example of them.
The judge said the pair did not defraud people so they could use the money to fuel an addiction or pay for gambling debts, but rather did it out of pure greed.
The couple created a web-based business called Aid4Families.com, which included vaguely written promises that suggested investors could earn healthy returns on their investments.
In a written decision released in June, Porter lashed out at Matthews and Briand. "The Aid4Families.com website is replete with exaggeration, false promise, and plain lies. It provides ample evidence of dishonest and discreditable behaviour on the part of the defendants."
The website is no longer active.
A police investigation was launched after investors in the U.S. reported problems. In one case, a couple had invested almost $350,000, expecting a high rate of return.
Taiwan mudslide leaves 400 missing
About 400 people are unaccounted for in Taiwan after a mudslide caused by Typhoon Morakot struck a mountain village, officials said Monday.
Morakot dumped about two metres of rain onto some communities in Taiwan over the weekend before moving on to China, where it forced the evacuation of nearly one million people along the east coast.
Medical personnel evacuate children by a military helicopter on Monday from a village struck by a landslide when Typhoon Morakot swept southern Taiwan. (Reuters)A Taiwanese police official told The Associated Press that about 100 people were rescued from a mudslide in Shiao Lin on Sunday. At least 400 people are believed to still be trapped in the area, the official said.
Meanwhile, one of the rescued villagers told United Evening News that he believed at least 600 people were still buried in the mud.
"The mudslide covered a large part of the village including a primary school and many homes," said resident Lin Chien-chung. "A part of the mountain above us just fell on the village."
The village remained cut off on Monday due to flood waters in the area and destroyed roadways and bridges.
Military helicopters dropped provisions into the area and were working to rescue survivors.
'A part of the mountain above us just fell on the village.'вЂ"Shiao Lin resident Lin Chien-chung
Continuing bad weather was preventing the helicopters from landing, said official Yang Chiu-hsing.
Taiwan is currently reporting that 14 people died from Morakot and 51 are officially listed as missing.
22 dead in Philippines
The storm is also believed to have left at least 22 dead in the Philippines. Officials said 18 people were injured and four people are missing, including three European tourists who were swept away.
Paramilitary policemen drive a motorboat in a flooded village in Cangnan County in eastern China on Sunday. (Associated Press)Morakot has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.
When the typhoon slammed into China's Fujian province on Sunday it was carrying heavy rain and winds up to 119 km/h, according to the China Meteorological Administration.
In China, the storm flooded hundreds of villages and towns and caused more than 2,000 houses to collapse, according to the state news agency.
Morakot is the first typhoon to hit the area this year. Typhoons frequently move in between July and September, often causing injuries and deaths in mountainous regions prone to landslides and flash floods.
Meanwhile in Japan, Typhoon Etau slammed into the west coast Monday. Twelve people were killed in raging flood waters and landslides, and 10 others were missing, police said.

Here's Your Calm During The Storm Of Discouragement
by: Richard Vegas
Have you ever known someone like this? "A person who knows how to start well, but finds it difficult to keep going"? A person whose successes are dependent on the quality of someone else's encouragement and motivation? Someone who consistently let's discouragement get the better of him? Ever found yourself like that? There's hope, read on.
Don't Worry, Be Happy! &^%$%^
Yeah right! How many times have you wished you could bit**-slap somebody for saying that at the moment you least needed it? I know I have a bunch. The problem is, most of the time you're in a moment of discouragement when that is said. So, those words come across as being insensitive and cold blooded.
Our first reaction is to lash out at the person who said it, to give them a piece of our mind. And, sometimes we even tell them to stay out of our life and mind their own business. Of course, we really don't mean it; we're just reacting to the discouragement that has pounced upon us.
But, have you ever considered this? The other person doesn't really feel your discouragement. Oh! Really, you say: Yeah, big revelation. Be nice to me now. Seriously, if they did, and especially if it was a loved one, they would never say words that would rattle your cage. But, the discouragement at hand makes us want to take out our saber and cut off their right ear.
Then what happens is, the other person, who at the moment was probably feeling pretty chipper and happy, suddenly feels the fury of your wrath so they take out their boxing gloves and then we got a full scale war on our hands. It all started because one person felt discouraged and now we got two people pi**ed off worse than a couple of fire breathing dragons.
Makes Your Hair Stand On End!
At a moment when you are really in your groove those words just roll off like water off a duck's back. But, discouragement can change the whole face of the situation. It can cause us to even sabotage our own best efforts. It can take the best laid plans of mice and men and turn them into mush.
Do not underestimate the potential effects of discouragement. It is like a virus; it spreads and can become so contagious that it acts like a permanent personality trait. Make no bones about it; it can make your dream not worth the powder to blow it up. When the roots get that deep, it takes military strength anecdotes to rid it.
A Thief In The Night!
Discouragement has probably caused as many business failures as lack of capital, because it is first to show up. The discouragement shows up long before the money runs out. Then the day by day emotional warfare begins and the potential to self-sabotage everything we are trying to accomplish. At that point; the money runs out!
At the end, we blame it on the lack of money, our spouse, our next door neighbor, our cat, or anything that makes us look not at fault and out of our control. After all, if we could have stopped it, we would have. But, what we really did was try to stop the effects of the failure before trying to stop the discouragement that was fueling it.
Consider this: take a forest fire out of control; it is much easier to cut off the fuel than to drown it. Just clear areas outside the fire and it'll burn itself out. If the fuel line to the engine is not cut off, then it's pretty safe to bet our efforts to stop the failure will not succeed. Succeeding at any task in life is hard enough without allowing discouragement to hamper our efforts. A mind filled with discouragement will never have the motivation to keep going.
A Force To Be Reckoned With!
It will cause the person affected by it to become jealous and resentful of others success. It can cause a woe-is-me attitude that will hang around like stink on a skunk. Discouragement will paralyze the strongest of dreams, which is the reason many people affected by it start well but can't keep going.
Many people try to cover it up. Some are able to do it pretty effectively. But, underneath there is an undeniable and unmistaken pain and hurt that saps the person's motivation and causes depression to set in many cases.
With such a wide spread problem is there anything that we can easily do to combat discouragement? Remember, discouragement needs fuel to spread and grow. The fuel is our thoughts but, just telling ourselves to, "don't worry, be happy," does no more good than it did when our friend said it to us.
Do This Bright And Early!
Just as soon as you tell yourself not to worry the pressure will become a storm. It's almost like waving a red flag in front of a bull. He is going charge it and discouragement is going pound your thoughts till you "forcibly" take action to run them out. Once discouragement has set in the situation calls for serious action. It's time to sit down with a good book.
At this point in time you need some help so don't try to be the honcho moncho and go it by yourself. You need for your eyes to feed on words that will help. I'm a firm believer in self-suggestion and auto-suggestion; these techniques have helped me immensely through the years. But discouragement is dangerous and you don't want to play footsy with it.
Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover!
Whatever book you read, do it quickly. I keep a handy Bible around me for moments like these. I get into the Psalms and Proverbs. My favorite is the ninety first Psalm. And, it is amazing how quickly discouragement takes a hike. I'm just as human as any one else and discouragement tests me like everyone. But, one thing I do is run for the Book when it comes. The Book anecdote never fails.
If you don't read the Bible then I would suggest you find some good motivational book to feed your eyes on. There are a lot of them. And, don't leave that book till you feel the pressure subsiding. It will, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes thirty minutes. But, that is a small price to pay for peace and calmness of mind.
This is the only method I have ever tried that works one hundred percent of the time combating discouragement. As many of you know I'm a big believer in, "you possess what you confess". The art of affirmation has brought me through in more cases than I can count. It's not "hocus pocus", it's not "blab it and grab it;" but it is a universal and spiritual truth that all can take advantage of and will greatly help anyone.
Don't Cut Off Your Nose To Spite Your Face!
So, don't try to re-invent the wheel and spend possibly years trying to discover some hot dog brand new strategy that no one has ever heard of and test it against your most dangerous enemy. Go to the Book, it'll never fail you.

Visit Walt Disney World in Style by: Cara Goldsbury Is your image of Walt Disney World one of sleeping in motel-style accommodations and dining on hamburgers as you roam the theme parks? Well, it's time to change that picture. Instead of a chain motel, how about an African-style lodge or a resort with the sophisticated ambience of an exclusive yacht club? Instead of chicken fingers, how about Potato Wrapped Florida Red Snapper with a Creamy Leek Fondue, Basil-Crusted Rack of Lamb with a Ragout of Spinach, Shitakes, and White Beans, or Grilled Buffalo Top Sirloin with Sweet Potato Hazelnut Gratin and Sweet Onion Jam? What Can Roses Do For You Today?
by: Alexander Pederoski
In the past millennium, it has been ordinary to see roses and their depictions being one and the same as attractiveness and grace. This is evidenced in writings as far back as Shakespeare (and probably further), demonstrating that roses have long been known as attractive and elegant. Obviously, the modern economy and most of today's business world has caught up with this notion, and has appealed to the concept of roses being the essence of loveliness, and often, even brought about this conviction. While this is not completely improper, roses have obviously become exceedingly pricey in the past few years. Florists have come into the market, and on a few holidays especially conceived for the sole purpose of exchanging greeting cards and roses, florists are able to pull in at least $75 for a dozen or so roses. Roses, while not cheap, have become a necessity for formal events and nice occasions; weddings being the best example of such. So what is the answer? What is the cheapest way to get roses for a formal event? Rose petals just might be the answer.
Rose petals make a wedding or any other occasion pleasant. Rose petals supply a great alternative to merely throwing rice. A couple of rose petals here and there all through the service can really add a pleasant feel to the day. Rose petals are available in an enormous variety of colors, shapes and sizes; therefore you are almost sure to be able to find something that will go well with your needs. However, be aware that most rose petals will cause discoloration. In light of this, you may want to think about freeze-dried rose petals. Freeze-dried rose petals will appear the same to ordinary rose petals, and yet you won't need to be concerned with stains on any kind of floor or carpet.
How to find the right petals?
Freeze dried rose petals keep for a long time, so if you are setting up a wedding well in advance, you need not be worried that they will lose their gleam over time. In light of this, many people would rather order the freeze dried rose petals well in advance of the wedding, freeing up the planners to think about other more significant things when the actual ceremony comes around. Freeze-dried rose petals can be found in quite a few places, and includes most places that advertise any flowers or flower-related supplies. If being thrifty is a concern, think about purchasing rose petals through a wholesale distributor.
In all, rose petals can make a great addition to any wedding ceremony.
In order to enjoy ourselves, we must be comfortable with ourselves and our surroundings. This is especially true in the backcountry.
Unfortunately, we cannot be happy all of the time, but there is something we can do about it. Working with a variety of clients over the years, I have seen how Yoga and exercise changed, and continue to change, them for the better.

A Guide To Essential Vitamins And Minerals That Prevent Hair Loss
by: Rose Lenk
In many cases, hair loss is attributed to a physical condition, such as Thyroid disease, or the lack of proper nutrition. Certain medications can also strip your body of vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy hair production and growth. In these cases, the proper vitamin and mineral regimen can significantly reduce hair loss and promote new hair growth.
After starting a vitamin and mineral supplement program, it can take up to 2 to 3 months to see results, but you will see results. So, do not become discouraged if your hair loss does not totally reverse itself after a few weeks of vitamin and mineral therapy.
The following is a guide to some of the more common vitamins and minerals that have been proven to be effective at promoting healthy hair growth. If you are going to start taking any of the listed supplements, be sure to consult with your doctor first and not to exceed the recommended dosage. As was mentioned earlier, taking more than the recommended dosage of these vitamins and minerals can have devastating consequences to your health. In addition, some supplements are not recommended for people with certain health conditions or for persons taking certain medications. So, be sure to talk with your doctor before taking any supplements to prevent hair loss.
In addition to these few examples, there are myriads of vitamins and minerals that can help you promote hair growth and slow down the process of hair loss. To find out which ones meet your needs, talk to your doctor.
Post Workout Nutrition: Secrets to a Hard, Lean Body by: Michael Geary As you've probably heard before, your post-workout meal may very well be your most important meal of the day. The reason is that when you're finished with an intense workout, you're entering a catabolic state where your muscle glycogen is depleted and increased cortisol levels are beginning to excessively break down muscle tissue.
Like clogged arteries or blood clots. For me the symptoms started very slowly and were minor.

Could Your Dog or Cat Be at Risk for Kidney Disease?
by: Bev Allen
Catching an Illness at an Early Stage Is Your Best Strategy
Just like people, animals are susceptible to illness and stress. And, just like people, there is a lot you can do to keep them healthy.
Julie noticed her dog, Zac, was drinking more water. Not just once, but several days in a row. She knew that excess thirst can be a sign of illness, so she took Zac to her veterinarian for tests. Blood and urine tests showed that Zac was in the early stages of acute kidney disease. But Zac was lucky. Because his problem was caught early, Julie's veterinarian was able to treat the disease successfully and Zac made a complete recovery.
What Is Kidney Disease?
Briefly, kidneys filter and remove waste material from the blood stream. They also regulate the volume and composition of your pet's body fluids.
There are two types of kidney disease:
Acute – a sudden loss of kidney functioning which is sometimes reversible, and
Chronic – a loss of kidney function that occurs gradually over time. Chronic kidney disease is often progressive, but, depending on the underlying cause and with careful management, animals often live comfortable lives for many years.
The causes of kidney disease can include inherited defects, infections, toxic substances and simply aging. Although the cause of kidney disease can be difficult to determine, with careful testing by your veterinarian, the disease can often be managed. Most treatments are aimed at decreasing the workload of the kidneys, reducing the severity of symptoms, and slowing the progression of the disease.
What Are Its Symptoms?
If kidney disease has undermined the kidney's ability to perform properly, waste materials accumulate in the blood. Signs that could indicate a potential kidney problem include:
• Loss of appetite
• Increased thirst
• Frequent urination or increased volume
• Poor hair coat
• Depression and/or vomiting
What You Can Do To Prevent Kidney Disease?
While kidney disease is most often found in older dogs and cats, even young animals can be affected. And while the disease is not always preventable, there ARE things you can do to help minimize the chances of your dog or cat developing the disease, such as:
• Feeding the best quality dog or cat food you can
• Providing continual access to clean, fresh water
• Eliminating toxic materials from the home
• Maintaining a low stress lifestyle
• Regular veterinary care to detect potential problems as soon as possible
You are your animal's daily detective and advocate. You are your animal's best chance for receiving medical treatment when the problem is still at an early stage and treatment is most successful. It is always better to prevent a disease, or to treat it early, than to have to treat it after it has become advanced.
If our boats lived in clean air we could let the wood go. Over time, it would weather naturally to an attractive ash gray and we could concern ourselves with other things.

3 Frequently Asked Questions About ACL Surgery
by: Geff Long
Do I really need surgery?
There several things that will affect this answer. Do you plan on playing sports or are you happy giving them up and doing things less stressful on the knees? If you can give up the sports that are rough on the knees, you might get by without surgery. Does your knee "go out" a lot? If it does and you have little control over it, surgery would probably be your best bet. If you would like to try rehabbing your knee and wearing a brace to see if that works, go ahead. Just keep in mind that every time your knee goes out of place, there is more damage being done. That is the route I took and I'm a little bit sorry about it. I ended up doing a lot of damage that I could have avoided.
Should I use general anesthesia or regional?
Either way will work. There are people on both sides of the fence that will tell you one is better than the other. Don't always listen, it's a very personal choice. With general anesthesia, you will be unconscious and have no recollection of the surgery. It will feel like you have simply blinked and the surgery will be over. General anesthesia has a bad effect on some people though. It could make you sick to your stomach for a few days. Doctors don't know exactly why or how general anesthesia does what it does, so there is always a slight risk. Some people are afraid they won't wake up. But the risk is very, VERY small.
Regional anesthesia can be given to you a couple different ways. It will either be an epidural or a spinal. They are very similar. Both are injected into your back. As a result, the pain signals from your knee never reach the brain. They are blocked by the regional anesthesia. This will allow you to be "awake" for the surgery. Now I say "awake" because you can choose your level of awareness. You can choose to have a regional anesthetic and still not be aware or remember a single thing from your surgery. This is done by giving you a sedative. The anesthesiologist will probably ask you what level you want.
1. Awake, Aware, but unconcerned.
2. Awake, Somewhat aware, not concerned.
3. Awake, and not aware.
4. Hammered. (They will give you enough of the sedative to make you sleep, but if you were to wake up during the surgery, you wouldn't care and probably wouldn't remember waking up anyway.)
How hard is physical therapy and does it hurt?
Physical Therapy isn't all that bad. Some things are easy and some are hard. One thing that is a little painful are the extension and flexion exercises. And after a while, those don't really hurt that much either. I've heard horror stories from people who say that PT (Physical Therapy) was the worst and they cried every time they had to do it, but that wasn't my experience at all. The exercises get tougher as you go, but it's a good feeling to be doing some work.
Lately, I have been training local Yoga teachers to keep up with this popular demand. There are Yoga instructors who teach exclusively at senior centers, assisted living complexes, adult day care centers, and nursing homes. There are more Yoga teaching opportunities, to work with seniors, than there are Yoga teachers to fill the need.Seniors are enthusiastic, fun to work with, appreciative, courteous, and the work is rewarding, in more ways than one.
Remember last time ? Remember how you felt when you arrived ? Aggravated, stressed, hot, tired, needing a couple of days to recover ? Did you make these mistakes ? * Packed your luggage just before you left home. Don't pack your bags a half hour before leaving.

'Social Bookmarking' As An Aggressive and Acceptable Blog Marketing Tactic
by: Greg White
Social bookmarking websites are becoming more and more popular. They allow you to save bookmarks online and Tag/Categorize them with keywords instead of saving them as bookmarks in the favorite's list of your browser. This is particularly useful when your browser based bookmarks have become unwieldy. It's also help since you can access your bookmarks from any computer where you have an internet connection.
I have compiled a list of Social Bookmarking websites from a number of sources. You can find it here: http://www.blogmarketingtactics.com/social-bookmarking/social-bookmarking-top-links.html
Once you have bookmarked them, you can view them, sort them by category/keyword as well as see links from others that have been categorized like yours.
You also establish RSS feeds for each category (tag) that you 'subscribe' to. This alerts you to new links in your areas of interest. Your bookmark collection/RSS Feed becomes viewable to others who can also copy your bookmarks to their own collection. So now you can aggressively promote your RSS feed to the RSS Directories and Search engines, syndicate them and make them available to a much wider audience.
Social bookmarking sites also help you to meet other people who are interested in the same topics you are and who may also have knowledge of web resources that you don't.
On Social Bookmarking sites, you first create an account. Then you bookmark interesting and useful things in the area of your interest or expertise. By doing so you create a useful Feed. Once you've done that you intermittently, (or aggressively), add useful and interesting items, (that could use additional exposure), from your own content. Make an honest effort to contribute USEFUL information and links. This is all about sharing and exposure. Done properly, you can be as aggressive as you want to be about sharing information. You can share your blog(s), links to your informational/resource sites etc. Think about the fact that when you share links to other's resources, you're also effectively promoting their content as well.
This is a way you can aggressively and ethically promote your content and the content of others. I personally have hundreds of gigabytes of my own information and information of others, connected to my notebook. In the final analysis, it's doing me no good what-so-ever just sitting there. But by organizing it, online, I can help myself, (getting organized, getting my content exposed, etc.) and help others at the same time.
If you spice up your feed with too much sales and marketing related or self promotional stuff, people can and will easily drop their subscription to your feed. And instead of gaining good will and doing a service to the internet community you could get labeled as a spammer and suffer the consequences.
So while being aggressive is possible and acceptable, being careful to consider the best interest of the community is certainly warranted.
Balancing being ethical and providing a useful service to others with promoting your own content enables you to be as aggressive as you like. But remember, in the final analysis, others will make the decision on whether it's ethical and useful or spam.

Can My Dog Get Flu?
by: Jon Dunkerley
In today's society with flu pandemics and such grabbing so much of the spotlight, it is easy for us to overlook the fact that our dogs can also contract a version of flu. Yes it is true, there is a flu virus becoming prominent in the canine world that is believed to have originated as an equine strain. This equine strain has started to appear in dogs in the United States opening up a huge can of worms that we as dog owners now have to deal with. As if there was not already enough dangerous factors that we must be aware of, now there is another potentially serious relatively unknown one to consider.
The Canine Influenza virus presents similar to the human version of the flu:
- Nasal discharge
- Eye discharge
- Fever
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Vomiting
- Labored breathing
Prophylaxis (Prevention)
- Keep your dog away from large dog populated areas.
- Avoid grooming shops, kennels, boarding kennels, etc.
- Keep your dog away from stray dogs
- Consult your vet for further prevention options
The trouble with the Canine Influenza virus, is that infected dogs can appear healthy. This is why it is crucial to keep your dog away from stray dogs, or dogs that you do not thoroughly know to be clear of the virus, (indoor pets)
Treatment
If you do feel that your dog has developed Canine Influenza, consult your vet immediately for best treatment options. Due to the relatively new appearance of the condition, treatment is limited to IV fluids, and Broad Spectrum antibiotics.

Russia 1st, Canada 4th in synchro solo free
Chloe Isaac narrowly missed winning Canada's third synchronized swimming medal at the world aquatics championships in Rome on Thursday.
The Brossard, Que., resident had to settle for fourth in the solo free competition, behind home favourite Beatrice Adelizzi, who won bronze.
Brossard won bronze a day earlier with Canada's free combination team.
Natalia Ishchenko won Russia's fourth synchro gold medal out of five events so far at the competition. Russia is perfect in the synchro pool, as it didn't enter the free combination.
But the silver medallist didn't agree with the final standings.
Spain's Gemma Mengual, who finished half a point back of Ishchenko with a score of 98.333, sobbed on the podium as she received her silver medal.
"I hope one day the judges understand that people expect fair and accurate judgments from them," said Mengual.
Judging has long been an issue in synchro, which is dominated by Russia and leaves some believing no matter how well they perform, they stand little chance of winning.
Ishchenko performed to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake to capture her second gold medal of the championships, adding to her solo technical title.
"I am very happy with my performance," Ishchenko said. "Only at the end of my exercise did I realize I had won the gold medal. My performance was perfect, and this is the result of a lot of training and commitment."
Mengual, who performed to Ray Charles's version of The Beatles' Yesterday, was upset that her marks for artistic impression (9.8) were lower than the ones for technical merit, where she matched Ishchenko.
"I was more confident than [the preliminaries] and I felt the crowd supporting me a lot," Mengual said. "The problem is still how the judges evaluate our performances.
"My strength is the artistic impression, and I can't understand how this was evaluated of lower quality than the technical merit."
The competition was a two-woman race that left Italy's Adelizzi and Canada's Isaac fighting for bronze.
Adelizzi's victory pumped up the home crowd at the Foro Italico.
"I still can't believe I won this medal," Adelizzi said. "I really gave it all I had. I would like to thank the crowd for their warm support."
USA wins appeal for open water bronze
Also Thursday, USA Swimming won an appeal to allow 10-kilometre open water swimmer Francis Crippen to retain the bronze he won in the event a day earlier.
FINA upheld the appeal after the Italian team protested Crippen's bronze medal performance since he swam outside the ropes en route to the finish.
The Italians were hoping the appeal would bump up their own Valero Cleri from third to fourth. German Thomas Lurz won the race and American Andrew Gemmell placed second.
With files from The Associated PressEdmonton Indy has Dixon revved up
Scott Dixon returns to Alberta this weekend to defend his 2008 victory at the Edmonton Indy and, with any luck, regain the points lead from teammate Dario Franchitti in what has become a back-and-forth battle.
"Now is probably a turning point," said Dixon in a phone interview Wednesday from Indianapolis, prior to flying to Edmonton for Sunday's race.
"With Edmonton, Kentucky, Mid-Ohio and Sonoma, the next few races are all going to be very challenging. I think we need a little bit of luck to roll our way, especially on the road courses."
The New Zealander, who celebrated his 29th birthday Wednesday, won the inaugural IndyCar event on the 1.96 mile (3.2 km) airport-road course at the City Centre Airport, edging Helio Castroneves out of pit row and leading the final 30 laps to victory.
The track's wide corners and bumpy stretches favour the daring and punishes the hesitant.
"Edmonton is actually really funny," said Dixon, who drives the blood red No. 9 Dallara Honda, a bull's-eye painted on the side, for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
"It's almost like a road course, but it has the bumps of a street course. It's really rough, but it's super-wide, super fast."
Franchitti captured the checkered flag in the last event in Toronto on July 12, matching Dixon with three victories apiece this season.
With 347 points, the Scottish driver took over top spot in the overall standings, just two points ahead of Dixon.
'He'll be tough to beat'
It was the third consecutive weekend the two Ganassi drivers swapped the points lead and the sixth race of the season that one of the two has been on top of the standings.
It's a bit of deja vu for Dixon, who won the overall championship in 2008 with six victories but, in 2007, was on his way to the crown when he ran out of gas on the last lap of the final race at Chicagoland.
Franchitti, then with Andretti Green Racing, roared past him for the championship.
With seven races to go, Dixon said he isn't thinking about exorcising demons from two years back.
"I don't look back on it, but a lot of people do," he said. "I hope this is the time where both Dario and myself can step it up and try and put a bit of a gap between us and [Team Penske rival Ryan Briscoe] because, if that guy gets it all going right, he'll be tough to beat."
Briscoe sits third, just 13 points back of Franchitti, who returned to open-wheel racing this season after struggling on the NASCAR circuit in 2008.
"Dario had a bit of a rough season last year," said Dixon, "He is super-motivated.
"He wants to prove a point. And motivation can sometimes push you through things."
'We go back and forth'
Not only has Dixon been dealing with Franchitti, but also with first-time fatherhood вЂ" daughter Poppy was born earlier this month вЂ" and rumours he may leave Ganassi to team up with friend Gil de Ferran's expected two-car IndyCar entry in 2010.
"I like Gil as a friend," Dixon said, mindful that rumours are just that вЂ" rumours.
"We go back and forth, but it's early days on that whole progress of where he's at and if we can do anything in the future. We're talking probably a long time down the road, but it's very hard to give up or change from such a successful team."
Dixon, a pilot, triathlete and a driver who won his first championship at age 13, is also on the verge of IndyCar history.
A win Sunday will be his 20th in IndyCar, surpassing Sam Hornish Jr. for most career wins in the series.
That would be a high-profile accomplishment for a man whose motto is "Fly under the Radar."
Team owner Chip Ganassi, in an email interview, said the ability to stay patient is Dixon's strength.
"He rarely makes mistakes," Ganassi said. "He always waits for the right opportunity and then rarely misses chances at making moves.
"It is certainly not that he doesn't take risks. It's just that Scott takes calculated risks вЂ" he is a talent like few others."
Ford posts surprise Q2 profit
Ford Motor Co. says it posted a surprise second-quarter profit of $2.3 billion US due mainly to a huge gain for debt reduction.
The profit is a vast improvement from the record $8.7-billion loss that Ford reported in the same quarter last year.
The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker says it earned 69 cents per share, compared to a $3.88-per-share loss for the same quarter in 2008.
But the latest profit comes because of a $3.4-billion gain due to debt reduction.
In March, Ford swapped stock and cash to reduce its loan and bond debt by $7.7 billion.
Without special items, Ford would have lost $424 million, or 21 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a per-share loss of 50 cents.

Honeymoon Trends
by: Paris Permenter & John Bigley
While the traditional vows endure, the ways to celebrate a marriage have changed right along with the travel industry. Today's honeymooner may be looking for value, adventure, or variety and searching for a getaway that's as exotic as a stay in a private European castle or nearby as a local bed-and-breakfast inn.
One constant is that couples are willing to spend money on a honeymoon - an average of $1,402 per couple compared to $421 spent annually on regular trips according to the Travel Industry Association of America. Young couples, age 18 to 24 years, spend the most on honeymoons, averaging $1,873. And as many as one-third of all honeymooners spend over $2,500 for that once-in-a-lifetime trip.
And while the move is back toward the traditional wedding and honeymoon associated with earlier generations, today's newlyweds are a far cry from the travelers of earlier days. "They're looking more for luxurious and romantic places, like the little out-of-the-way small hotels and inns and private castles," points out Sylvie del Giudice, spokeswoman for Les Romantiques Hotels. "They're ready for a different experience. It's the experience of a lifetime. They are choosing to go further away on their honeymoon to a different environment and that includes everything: a different language, culture, and food."
Today's couples are finding new ways to celebrate their union, creating honeymoon trends that are being felt throughout the industry.
ALL-INCLUSIVE FUN
Started in Jamaica but spread throughout the Caribbean and Mexico and into some other regions as well, the all-inclusive vacation is becoming ever more popular with honeymooners - and their families. Their "one price pays all" policy makes the all-inclusive trip more and more convenient for parents purchasing a honeymoon package as a gift for newlyweds. Air, transfers, meals, drinks, watersports, and even tips are included in the tab at all-inclusive resorts.
GETTING MARRIED ON YOUR HONEYMOON
Getting married on your honeymoon is also an increasingly popular concept in the Caribbean, where resort packages provide everything from wedding cake to music. At some properties like SuperClubs (http://www.superclubs.com), guests can enjoy a free wedding, including the minister's fee and marriage license.
MEXICO AND CANADA
The devaluation of Canada and Mexico's currencies mean an increase in honeymoon business for financial reasons. Canada is also gaining popularity as a honeymoon hotspot. Couples looking for a white honeymoon find it in ski areas such as Banff, Whistler, and Jasper, and those seeking big city culture seek out cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. The current strength of the American dollar against the Canadian also makes our northern neighbor an attractive honeymoon destination. "Canada is extremely popular as a honeymoon destination," explains Judy Love Rondeau from the office of the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas. "Your money goes 40% further in Canada. Also, honeymooners like the cities of Montreal and Quebec City because they are like going to Paris without going so far and spending so much money."
CITY DESTINATIONS
For some couples, a chance to enjoy the romance of a big city and the elegance of fine dining makes major cities a honeymoon destination. A recent study by the American Society of Travel Agents showed that the most popular city was Las Vegas. Orlando, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles were other top choices.
OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS
While some couples choose to vacation close to home, conserving both time and money, others see a honeymoon as a chance for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. For these travelers, it's the time for a fantasy journey to destinations whose very names mean romance. For these lucky honeymooners, the American Society of Travel Agents has found that Great Britain is the top European destination, followed by France and Germany.
"We see more and more honeymooners going to Europe versus the Caribbean," says Les Romantiques Hotels' Sylvie del Giudice. "People are getting married older, and they're more interested in the culture and the experience and the discovery of Europe. Or they want to go back to Europe. I deal a lot with people who went to Paris once and now want to show it to their spouse.
"They usually combine romantic cities like Paris, Florence, or Rome with a resort escape like the Riviera or Normandy or the Amalfi coast of Italy so they have the best of both worlds," explains del Giudice. "We have also noticed that honeymooners are becoming more and more adventurous and discovering new areas."
Looking for new European experiences is also bringing more honeymooners to less traditional destinations. Destinations like Portugal, Malta, and Turkey are gaining popularity.
ADVENTURE HONEYMOONS
The current trend toward adventure and eco-tourism vacations hasn't overlooked the honeymoon industry. "We have seen a number of newlyweds go on dude ranch vacations as well as our other trips like the cattle drives," says Dave Wiggins, president of Boulder, Colorado-based American Wilderness Experience. "It's the kind of thing for couples who are looking for something inspiring, something they can come back and say 'guess what we did on our honeymoon.'"
Although Wiggins has sold many honeymooners rugged adventure packages, ranging from a 10-day safari in Alaska to sea kayaking in Baja Mexico to river rafting along Idaho's Salmon River, many honeymooners favor soft adventure. "The lodge-based vacations tend to be more popular with honeymooners because they have a bed and roof over their head and a hot shower," points out Wiggins.
"We're seeing more and more soft adventure travel so we have more deluxe lodge-based options," points out Wiggins. Whether honeymooners overnight in a mountain cabin or in a seaside tent, however, he explains the popularity of adventure travel with today's travelers. "At a resort there's a lot to pick and choose, but you can find yourself being a spectator and watching the action go around. On an adventure trip, you're smack dab in the action. There's no sitting back and watching the action go by in front of you - you are the action on an adventure tour."
Finding that special quality is up to the individual honeymooners themselves. With the myriad of choices and a selection of atmosphere that ranges from white-knuckle adventure to hedonistic laziness, there's something for everybody.
The most expensive brands however does not always equate to the best fitness shoes for your body type.Nike shoes (some of the most expensive) where not my best choice, a running shoe called "The Beast", about $125 actually was the most supportive for a big guy. Plus I also invested in good sports slippers by a company called "Keen".My wife (a very frugal lady) was incredulous when I invested over $100 dollars each for both a running shoe and slipper like shoes to wear around the house.

When Things Happen Without Reason
by: Selena Richardson
Sometimes things happen in life for apparently no reason at all. You think that there isn't any reason for something to happen until after the fact when that something has changed your life or pointed you into a new direction.
Two seemingly totally opposite things can happen to you one day but they have a certain affect on you. Let's say you get this idea to do something, like read a certain book you keep putting off. The idea pops in and out of your head and you dismiss it. The usual 'I'll do it later' routine.
During the day while working, someone casually mentions that book, talking about how much it helped them in their situation and so on and so on. You dismiss it again because of course you'll read it at another time.
A few days later, you're at a doctor's appointment and you're flipping through a magazine. You see a review for the same book. By now you should be thinking either you're crazy or somebody's trying to give you a big hint.
That's the point when you should take the hint and read the book. That's how life works. Intuition hits - you get an inspiration or an idea to do something and you get bombarded left and right with all of these situations that don't seem like they have any similarity. Until you take a closer look and then you see. If you look hard enough at each situation it's like putting the pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. If you fit each piece in the right place you finally get the picture.
Let's say that you want to buy a computer program. It's a really good program that you need to help run your business. The only problem is that it costs $200 and you don't have that money right now to pay for it. So you put it on your to do list for a couple months down the road when you can fit it in your budget.
You go through your day to day routine and guess what? You get an email from a discussion list answering someone else's question about the same program. As you read it you realize that it's from the maker of the program. And here's the kicker - there's a new special 30 day trial download of the program.
So you think coincidence. I say not! You go to the website to download the program and it's a 60 day trial instead of 30 days. Now you're probably dumbfounded by now because you just told yourself that morning you would have to wait a couple months to buy it. Except now you can use the program for free for a couple of months and then buy it. Now if you still aren't convinced of synchronistic events then let me say this - every single thing happens for a reason.
Look back on some of your past experiences in life. I am sure that there were several times where things happened to you for no apparent reason at all. These events either led to other events or were major turning points in your life that didn't match up anywhere else. They didn't seem to fit in to what you were doing at the time. But looking back, they fit in perfectly. It's just that you couldn't see it at the time.
When things happen without any obvious reason, remember that there's something you need to pay attention to. There's always a reason, it's just that you can't see it while it's happening. There's an unseen force that's always pointing you in the right direction whether you notice it or not. And those unreal experiences, those strange synchronicities - things happening by 'chance' are usually a push in the direction you want (or didn't know you wanted) to go. Just follow the flow and say thanks - whether it's a computer program that you get to try out for free or it's a book you've been putting off reading.
The problem is that the chocolate Americans consume most is not the kind that was studied. The more popular kinds of chocolate have little or no positive effect on your health.
This will lead you to have "high blood glucose levels." Over years, the high blood glucose level can damage major organs like your heart, eyes, and kidneys. Statistics:According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 18.2 million people in the United States with Diabetes.

Jekyll vs. Hyde, 2 Faces of Immortality!
by: Richard Vegas
Meet the most important person you will ever meet in your life. You better! For sometime during your life you will meet him. He could appear very suddenly with such shock that his recognition will change your life forever.
When you finally do meet him he will reveal a great secret to you. The secret……that inside of you is the power that will attract everything in life you want. And, also repel it. Yuk.
This force on the inside of you has two faces. One has the ability to attract wealth, success, happiness, love; And the other....., has the power to rob you of all your dreams.
One face of this power is what enables some people to climb the ladder of success and stay there all their lives. The other face, of this power, keeps some people at the bottom of the ladder all their lives. And, that same face is what drags some people down from the top of the ladder to the bottom.
Every adversity has the seed of a Greater Benefit!
Oh yea, I hear some of you saying.. Listen, it's ok to sit on your pity pot now and then. Just remember to flush the thing when you're done. :>)
Let me give you an example. There was a little kid known as Clem Labine. In his day he was a great baseball pitcher. But, even while he was a youngster, he had a dream of playing baseball. One day an accident broke his index finger on his throwing hand.
It never did heal correctly and was crooked from that time on. Well, Clem thought his baseball days were over. He became very discouraged.
His coach told him that some things that appear to be disasters turn out to be blessings in disguise. It all depends on which FACE manifest's itself in the troubles that come your way.
Clem took his coach's advice and kept on playing. Soon he discovered that the crooked finger allowed him to throw the wickedest curve ball that no other pitcher possessed the ability to throw.
All of a sudden, remember what we talked about in the first paragraph? "Suddenly"!! Clem met the most important person in his life. He met the power inside of him that would destine him for greatness. He met Barney Fife. Nah……..you know I'm kidding.
Well, at that moment, Clem decided to flush his pity pot face. And when he did, he rose back to the top of the ladder just as surely as the other face had taken him to the bottom. It all began with a change of attitude. I'm not minimizing the hard work, dedication, and constant effort he put forth. But, none of that would have been his salvation without a change of face.
The most important lesson he learned was this: You ready? It's simple. He learned to always look for the GOOD in his unfortunate situations. ATTITUDE. If you're looking for the good, you will find what you're looking for. I trust it's self-explanatory about looking through the eyes of your other face.
Ok, It's time to set the prisoner free.
He used his new found attitude to set the prisoner free. Clem discovered the prisoner was he. Have you set your prisoner free? Have you heard the quote, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul?" You know why? Because we are the masters of our attitude.
You know something else? It's eternally working all the time either constructively or destructively. Whatever thoughts you proactively hold onto, will translate into reality no matter what they are. Thoughts of poverty lead to poverty. Thoughts of prosperity lead to riches.
When your attitude towards yourself and your abilities are healthy, and your attitude toward others is generous, you have then set the prisoner free. You have set in motion the power that will attract all kind of success in your life. When your attitude is lousy, you will attract all kind of poop in your life. You wanna know what poop is? It's chocolate. Nah…….that's a lie; I just wanted to see if you were awake.
Hey, I've even heard people say, "Yea, but the grass is greener on that guy's side of the fence." Well, if it is, you can bet your bottom dollar his water bill is higher. I've even heard some people say God is dead. And, Elvis is alive. How stupid can you get? You can always find something that looks bigger and better in your neighbor's front yard. Or, bedroom. "Maybe, that's how stupid you can get."
The Verdict...Guilty of Sabotage!
The next time things start going wrong, wrong, wrong, just stop and ask; What is my attitude right now? Is it optimistic? Is it hopeful? Is it raunchy? I didn't say it was easy.
Hey, that sounds like material for a good song. Don't start daydreaming now. A bad attitude may not have caused everything to go wrong today, but, it will keep things going wrong tomorrow, and the next day, and then cause you to sabotage your own efforts. And you won't even know you shot yourself in the foot. Hmmm....I think we just answered the question, "How stupid can you get".
The Pot Of Gold At The End Of The Rainbow!
Yea, it's true. If our attitude can be responsible for hurting us? It can also be attributable to our good fortune. It's a universal law. Consider this. H2O makes water. It's a law. Always has, always will. And, I don't care how hard you kick and scream and try and cry, it won't ever make root beer. And, every time you put the right attitude to work inside of you, you will make water. But, if you add dirt, you'll get mud. So don't try to mix a little good attitude with a little bad attitude, cause you'll end up with a little poop attitude.

How Long Will My Cat Live?
by: Larry Chamberlain
The answer to that depends upon several factors.
The care that you give your cat, the quality of the food that your cat eats, the kind of lifestyle that your cat lives. All these things play their part in the chances of your cat enjoying a long life.
Veterinary medicine has made some great advances in recent years, and this is one of the reasons the average age of domestic cats is increasing. A well cared for cat that is kept indoors and is fed a good nutritional diet, would be expected to live for about 15 years.
Some cats do live to 20 plus years and there are records of a few cats reaching over 30 years. These sort of ages for a cat are very much the exception however.
The genetic make up of a cat can be a factor in determining its life span. Some breeds of cat appear to be more resilient than others. Selective breeding can have the effect that some breeds are genetically prone to ailments which shorten their life expectancy. Mixed breeds, the typical moggie or mouser, is usually more vigorous in its genetic make up and may expect to live slightly longer than a pure breed cat.
Cats that are kept strictly as indoor only cats stand a better chance of living to a ripe old age than cats that are allowed outside. The reasons for this are many. Outdoor cats face danger from traffic, from being attacked by other cats or by other animals. They run increased risk of being accidentally poisoned by pesticides or deliberately poisoned by malicious humans. Outdoor cats are also at risk from catching feline diseases particularly from the feral cat population.
The are many things to consider in deciding to keep your cat as an indoor only cat or an outdoor-indoor cat, life expectancy is only one of them.
Overfeeding your cat is a good way to shorten its life. An overfed cat stands more chance of health problems than a cat that is weight controlled. Diabetes, arthritis, breathing difficulties, heart and liver disease can all result as a consequence of overfeeding. All of these conditions may mean your little pet not living a long and healthy feline life. Your veterinarian can advise on the best diet for your cat.
Exercise too, is important for your cat's health and in maintaining its weight. Healthy cats mostly exercise themselves of course, but the playtime you enjoy with your cat can contribute to keeping kitty healthy. Elderly cats particularly benefit from gentle play-exercise.
Regular visits to the vets for routine checks will give your cat the best chance to live a long life, and to live that life healthily. Many life shortening problems can be tackled successfully if detected early.
Neutered or spayed cats often enjoy a slightly longer life than unaltered felines. This is particularly so for male cats as an unaltered male will often receive injuries defending his territory. There are many other good reasons for spaying and neutering of course, aside from extending the life of your cat.

129 reported killed in Chinese rioting
Chinese state media say 129 people have been killed and more than 800 hurt in violence in the country's western Xinjiang region.
The official Xinhua News Agency did not immediately give any other details Monday on the number of deaths. It earlier reported that four people had been killed in violence after nearly 1,000 protesters from a Muslim ethnic group rioted Sunday in the region's capital Urumqi, overturning barricades, attacking bystanders and clashing with police.
The protesters were demanding an investigation into a fight between Uighurs and Han Chinese workers at a southern China factory last month that state media said left two people dead.
Activists said police fired shots in the air and used batons to disperse a crowd that had swelled to nearly 1,000.
The late-afternoon protest in the city of Urumqi was a rare mass demonstration in Xinjiang province, a region that has seen occasional separatist violence against Chinese rule.
More than 300 people, mostly members of the largely Muslim Uighur ethnic group, had gathered to demand an investigation into last month's brawl between Uighur and Han Chinese workers at a toy factory, said Gulinisa Maimaiti, a 32-year-old employee of a foreign company who took part in the protest.
Silent protest at first
At first, the 300 people held a silent, sit-down protest at the People's Square in Urumqi, Gulinisa said.
"We are mourning our compatriots who were beaten to death in Guangdong," Gulinisa said in a phone interview.
Accounts of what happened differed, but the violence seemed to have started when the crowd, which Gulinisa said grew to 1,000 people, refused to disperse.
Xinhua News Agency said earlier the crowd attacked passers-by, torched vehicles and interrupted traffic on some roads.
Gulinisa said police pinned protesters to the ground before taking some 40 protesters away.
"The police fired shots into the sky. They took people away in cars," he said.
Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the pro-independence World Uighur Congress based in Germany, said he received calls from Urumqi describing the protest as peaceful until police used force to try to clear the square.
"Riot police were using police batons to beat people," he said. One caller he spoke with said police opened fire.
Dilxat said some protesters were beaten badly.
Video shot from a building nearby and photos from mobile phones taken from the protest showed people running from police and a car on fire. In other shots, smoke rises in the distance and fire engines race to the protest.
The Urumqi police and city government refused or declined to comment about the incident.
Tensions between Uighurs and Chinese are never far from the surface in Xinjiang, China's vast Central Asian buffer province.
Uighur separatists have waged a sporadic campaign for independence in recent decades, and the military, armed police and riot squads maintain a visible presence in the region.
After a few years of relative calm, separatist violence picked up last year with attacks against border police and bombings of government buildings.
Suicide bomb at NATO base in Afghanistan kills 1
Police say a suicide attacker detonated a car bomb near the gates of the main NATO base in southern Afghanistan, killing a civilian and wounding eight other people.
The attack outside Kandahar Airfield early Monday came as thousands of U.S. Marines in a neighbouring province mounted a major offensive against the Taliban.
Border police commander Gen. Saifullah Hakim said the bomber blew himself up with the car bomb outside the gates of the base on the outskirts of Kandahar, the main city in southern Afghanistan. The wounded included four civilians and four Afghan soldiers.
Over the weekend, insurgent attacks killed three British soldiers in Helmand, the province where the U.S. offensive is underway.

by: Rick Valens
Still remember that very moment when you first laid your eyes on your now, ever still most beloved pet? Feeling that very special bond between the both of you when you pick up that little fellow? It was sure such a sweet moment isn't it? That little fellow just looks so adorable staring so innocently at you didn't it? Little could we have ever imagine that, that little life would one day grow up to be old and eventually leave us.
Thinking back now, I know you would certainly miss it even dearly. Please feel ashamed do not, should it even bring you tears. It's truly alright to be feeling so. Losing our most beloved pet can be just as hurting as losing our very loved ones. A part of the family, I believe you would have already long regarded it as. The same would be, for most of our pet owners, I deeply believe too.
At such a grieving time, it's just natural for us, pet owners to feel the strong desire to communicate the loss of our most dearly loved and missed pet. But sometimes it is just so sad that few, even our close friends could understand our grief. "C'mon just get yourself a new one", that is always a very hurting remark to be hearing. Because of such hurting remarks, many pet owners are very reluctant to disclose their immense grief over the loss of their pets, keeping everything to themselves.
It would usually take quite a while before one could actually get over the loss, getting back to their normal self again. But nevertheless, please do not feel ashamed in anyway should you be feeling so. Remember, you are not the only one.
Well perhaps, creating an online memorial dedicating it specially to your ever most beloved pet would be a nice way to communicate your loss, helping to cope with your grief. Likewise, it would actually be also a meaningful way of a creating an ever-lasting tribute in memory of your dearly lost pet.
There are actually quite a couple of wonderful sites providing such thoughtful services. With an online memorial page dedicated specially for your pet, you can put down in your very words, all your truthful thoughts and sentiments on it. To share all those wonderful moments and stories of your beloved pet with friends and family all over the world, not forgetting the lots of other pet lovers out there whom would deeply understand your feelings. Many of these pet owners have also created that special memorial page in memory of their wonderful pets. Looking at these wonderful memorial pages sure bring back so much fond memories. Photographs of your pet can nevertheless be included in the memorial page too, creating an even lasting memory for all. Likewise, an online pet monument service is also available from some of these sites.
Well whatever the case may be, our special pet friends have without doubts, truly dedicate their life to entertaining us, unconditionally loving us, cheering us up when we were down, been such a great companion ever. To be always remembered, they certainly deserved to be. An online memorial or monument of an ever-lasting memory of them will definitely be a truthful and meaningful gift to be dedicated to our special pet friends.
Thomas' Hospital (U.K.) is part of the team that studied 1,100+ British women between 18 and 76 years of age."Telomeres cap the ends of chromosomes in cells and protect them from damage. However, each time a cell divides -- and as people age -- these caps get shorter, so decreases in telomere length have long been associated with the aging process.Reporting June 14 2005, in the early online edition of The Lancet, the British researchers found that telomeres of obese women.....were much shorter than those of lean women......
After arriving by air into Guadalajara, my bus trip from there to Morelia with Primera Plus, one of Mexico's first class bus systems, had taken about three or three and one-half hours over the fairly new autopista (freeway) that connects Guadalajara and Morelia with Mexico City. The ride had been a marvelous, comfortable experience when compared to riding Greyhound buses in the United States.

Does Your Dog Miss You Too Much?
by: Blake Kritzberg
Your dog seems to be driving you up the wall lately, exhibiting serious behavior problems -- and no amount of verbal correction seems to work. She chews the furniture, gnaws on shoes, turns over the trash cans, howls and barks when you're not around, or even seems really depressed when you come home.
There could be many reasons for behavior problems such as these, but chances are that your dog just misses you too much, and is showing she's bored and lonely. This is especially true if you only have one dog in the house and she's home alone while you work.
One solution to the problem is to try to keep your dog entertained while you are gone. Get a bone or a Kong chew toy, so she'll have a challenge for when you're not around. Another tactic is to turn on the radio so she'll hear human voices. Puppies respond especially well to this; it seems to reassure them much like an actual human presence. Also, if you can lend her a worn shirt, try leaving this in your dog's bed so that your smell remains even when you aren't there.
Discourage Destructive Behavior
In cases of destructive behavior problems, it pays to correct your dog immediately when you catch her chewing your furniture or taking out her frustrations on your belongings. Be vigilant at first -- instant feedback is much easier for your dog to understand than corrections a minute or two later. When you catch her, rush to your dog's side, grab her by the back of her neck and give her a firm "No!"
This should let her know she's done wrong, but if you catch your dog doing it again, some owners may want to roll up 10 to 20 sheets of newspaper and give her a mild whack on the thigh. This won't hurt her, but the sound will seem threatening and loud.
I used to come home to the remains of a stack of mail, ripped to shreds by my dog. I knew that she'd probably done it hours ago, so to reinforce the memory of the negative behavior, I grabbed some of the mail, put it near her mouth and uttered a firm "No!" She shredded the mail a few more times, but each time I reinforced with "No!" and she soon got the message, to our mutual happiness.
Help Your Pup Feel "Up"
Are you playing with and talking to your dog when you come home? Doing so can make a great difference to her feelings. Just like us, dogs want to be acknowledged and fussed over when we're around. Dogs being such social animals, it doesn't work if we merely feed and walk them and ignore them the rest of the time. If we can't spend some quality time with our pets, we might as well not have them at all.
If you can afford it and your dog is alone, give serious thought to getting another. This worked well for me -- after my second dog came into the picture, my first turned into an angel, and has stayed that way ever since -- which is to say, I have a happier dog!
If a second dog just isn't an option for you, you could also spend a little more time bonding with your dog by enrolling both of you in an obedience class. This way, you'll learn more control and teamwork involving your four-footed friend. You may even find your dog more relaxed and better behaved, as the training puts you in a dominant light and takes the pressure off her to lead the household "pack." Plus, your dog gets a chance to meet other dogs. You'll soon notice how eager she is for the next class!
